The purpose of FRSTimeTrack is to help you keep track of the time you have spent on a particular project, or for a particular client. If you do consulting work, a quick and simple solution is needed to help you keep track of your time, especially if you have more than one client.

Non-billable projects may also need to be kept track of. For example, if you have a hobby and you would like to know just how many hours you have spent on a particular project, use FRSTimeTrack to easily track the hours.

Getting Started

When you start FRSTimeTrack, click on the "Projects | Add..." menu command to add your first project. The only bit of data that is required is a unique name for the project. The other information in that window is optional. If the project is for a client, then entering the client's contact information may be useful, and that information will be used in any invoices you generate with FRSTimeTrack.

The next time you start FRSTimeTrack, the last-used project is automatically loaded.

How Do I Use FRSTimeTrack?

After you have added the project/client, you can press the green plus icon on the toolbar to add a new, blank entry. You can also use the F4 function key. Both of these are shortcuts for the "Edit | Add Task..." menu command. You can then enter all the specifics about that task.

However, if you want to keep track of the exact time spent, you can use the stopwatch timer of the main window. Don't add a task; simply start the timer. When the work is done, or you are done working on the project for the day, press the square stop button of the stopwatch timer. FRSTimeTrack will automatically add a task entry to the main grid, with all the pertinent information set. All you have to do is enter the task's description, whether or not it is billable, and any notes you want to keep (notes are not shown on invoices).

Note that the stopwatch timer has a pause/resume button, so if you are interrupted or go out to lunch, you can pause the timer. The application's icon will show an animation in the Windows TaskBar to alert you to the fact that the timer is running or paused (it is easy to forget to pause or resume the timer if the application is not visible).

How Do I Invoice Clients?

When you click on the "View | Invoices..." menu command, you will see a window wherein you can set up any number of invoices for this project or client. An invoice allows you to define the date range of the tasks, and set such things as sales taxes, any debits or credits for the client, etc. Only tasks flagged as billable are included in an invoice. When you have entered all the information for the invoice, you can view it by clicking that window's "View..." button. From there, you can print or copy-to-Clipboard the invoice.

How Do I Get the Latest Version?

You can always download FRSTimeTrack directly via the "Download" tab above. However, FRSTimeTrack automatically checks to see if a new version has been released each time you run it, if you have enabled that option and your computer has an active Internet connection. When a new version has been found, it will be downloaded, and you will be notified of the automatic upgrade when you close the application. Making sure you are always up-to-date is both free and easy!

(fig. 4)

When an upgrade is being downloaded, a download icon appears in the status bar (see figure 4). Note that you can close the application at any time. If an upgrade was in the process of being downloaded, the application will stop and try again the next time you run it.

(fig. 5)

When the download has completed, the icon will change to one showing a sun (see figure 5). At that point the application will be upgraded when you close it.

If for some reason you wish to disable automatic upgrading, click on the "Settings | Automatic Application Upgrade" menu command to turn OFF that feature. The state of the check mark to the left of that menu command indicates whether or not FRSTimeTrack checks for new upgrades. If you turn that option on again, FRSTimeTrack will immediately check the Fourth Ray Software server to see if a new version is available, and download it if there is one.

For How Long Can I Use the Free Version?

(fig. 6)

FRSTimeTrack comes with a one-time, 21-day trial period during which you can use the full functionality of the application for free. There are no restrictions during that time period. When the free trial period is over, you must purchase a license to continue to use the application (click on the "Buy" tab above). All of the data you entered during the free trial period will still be there after you have paid for your license. There is no separate download required after you have purchased your license. The status bar (see figure 6) indicates how many days you have remaining in your free trial period.

How Do I Enable the Paid-for Version?

When you have paid for a license for FRSTimeTrack, you will receive your unique serial number. You can enter the serial number via the "FRSTimeTrack | Enter Serial Number..." menu command. You will also see this window when you start the application and you have allowed your trial period to expire. You need to enter the serial number you received from us. We recommend copying and then pasting the serial number, as it is easy to mistype it. When ready, press the OK button to have FRSTimeTrack verify the serial number. If it is valid, the application will switch to a "paid-for" version, which you can verify by clicking on the "FRSTimeTrack | About..." menu command.
