The purpose of FRSTrainTracker is to help model railroaders and model train collectors to keep track of their locomotives, freight and passengers cars, cabooses, and maintenance-of-way cars.

You can add as many model entries as you wish. A large number of data-entry fields are provided by the application. However, the true power of FRSTrainTracker is the fact that it allows you to add, rename, hide, or remove data entry fields. As you get used to the application, you may want to experiment with these features (see the "Field" menu).

You can associate one or more model photos and prototype photos with each entry, if so desired. By default there are three model photos and one prototype photo field visible. There are additional fields available, by clicking on the "Field | View Hidden Fields..." menu command (two more model photo ones, and four more prototype photo ones). Once a photo is selected, a thumbnail image of that photo will be shown along the right-hand side of the main window.

In addition to photos, you can also maintain a "to-do" list for the model (see To-do List multi-line edit field below the grid). This allows you to keep track of the changes that you would still like to make to the model, things such as changing out the couplers, weathering, etc. If you have already made changes to the model, there is also a field for keeping track of those (see the Upgrades edit field below the grid).

We all know that there will come a time when we pass on to the Great Passenger Station in the Sky, so by having all your models and their specifics entered into FRSTrainTracker, you will help your spouse, family members, or friends determine what is in your estate. You can assign a "current value" of the model, so that they will be able to determine what you considered a fair-market value for the model. A fair-market value might also help in determining the overall value of your collection for insurance purposes.

Getting Started

This is very easy! Press the green-Plus button on the toolbar, which adds a blank model entry to the Inventory selection list, and you can immediately start to enter whatever data you want to track for that model. Since you can update the data at any time, you can enter just the basics and then move on to the next model (press the green-Plus button again).

To see a summary report of what you have entered, click the "Reports | Custom Reports..." menu command. In the window that appears, in the Report selection list, select either "Cars" or "Locomotives" to view your listing. In the future you can modify these reports, or you can add your own.

There are many features built in to FRSTrainTracker, so take your time to explore them. If you need more information, be sure to press the F1 key or click the Info button of any window. Keep the Documentation Center window open, because its content will dynamically adjust to show information about what you have selected in the application. This is especially helpful with the main window's Model Information grid, where each field has supplemental information, including how to set or modify a value.

How Do I Get the Latest Version?

You can always download FRSTrainTracker directly via the "Download" tab above. However, FRSTrainTracker automatically checks to see if a new version has been released each time you run it, if you have enabled that option and your computer has an active Internet connection. When a new version has been found, it will be downloaded, and you will be notified of the automatic upgrade when you close the application. Making sure you are always up-to-date is both free and easy!

(fig. 4)

When an upgrade is being downloaded, a download icon appears in the status bar (see figure 4). Note that you can close the application at any time. If an upgrade was in the process of being downloaded, the application will stop and try again the next time you run it.

(fig. 5)

When the download has completed, the icon will change to one showing a sun (see figure 5). At that point the application will be upgraded when you close it.

If for some reason you wish to disable automatic upgrading, click on the "Settings | Automatic Application Upgrade" menu command to turn OFF that feature. The state of the check mark to the left of that menu command indicates whether or not FRSTrainTracker checks for new upgrades. If you turn that option on again, FRSTrainTracker will immediately check the Fourth Ray Software server to see if a new version is available, and download it if there is one.

For How Long Can I Use the Free Version?

(fig. 6)

FRSTrainTracker comes with a one-time, 21-day trial period during which you can use the full functionality of the application for free. There are no restrictions during that time period. When the free trial period is over, you must purchase a license to continue to use the application (click on the "Buy" tab above). All of the data you entered during the free trial period will still be there after you have paid for your license. There is no separate download required after you have purchased your license. The status bar (see figure 6) indicates how many days you have remaining in your free trial period.

How Do I Enable the Paid-for Version?

When you have paid for a license for FRSTrainTracker, you will receive your unique serial number. You can enter the serial number via the "FRSTrainTracker | Enter Serial Number..." menu command. You will also see this window when you start the application and you have allowed your trial period to expire. You need to enter the serial number you received from us. We recommend copying and then pasting the serial number, as it is easy to mistype it. When ready, press the OK button to have FRSTrainTracker verify the serial number. If it is valid, the application will switch to a "paid-for" version, which you can verify by clicking on the "FRSTrainTracker | About..." menu command.
